HENDERSON COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT STATION #2
The History of Station #2
In 1977, the residents of the Bargerton, Mt. Gilead, Union Cross and other surrounding communities met at Bargerton School to discuss the organization of a volunteer fire department. It was decided that the department would be formed, and a building would be built to house the needed equipment. This was the beginning of Station #2. After donations and fund raisers of the communties and volunteers built a 36'X40' building on land that was donated to the department. The first equipment was a 1951 4X4 Jeep and Tanker that was loaned to the station by the Forestry Division. A Tanker was built in 1983 which featured a dump valve. This was the first of its kind in the county. The valve allowed firefighters to dump water into a portable dump tank in less than a minute, freeing the tanker to return for more water while the firefighters continued to battle the blaze. Once again in 1985 the firefighters joined together to build a 16'X40' addition to house a 1981 Chevy Duelly Brush Truck. Along this same time they got a 1965 Ford Class-A Pumper. In 1994 the department purchased a 1978 Mack Engine that would pump 1,500 gallons per minute (Now Engine 10). In 1996 the firefighters added the Johnny R. Williams (District Chief from 1977-1996) Community/Meeting Room, a 52'X40' room on top of the station. In 2000 the department purchased a 2000 Freightliner FL70 Engine that would pump 1,250 gallons per minute. In 2001 the firefighters was donated a 1989 Ambulance which they painted and made a Squad/Service Truck. They also purchased a 2002 Frieghtliner Fl70 Tanker. They also added a 36'X39' addition to the station to house the brush truck and the old tanker, that also serves as a communty room to the communty.
